Tatiana Nikolayeva’s interpretation of Tchaikovsky belongs to a long Russian tradition in which the piano is treated not simply as a virtuoso instrument, but as a vehicle for an entire orchestral and emotional world. Here she performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23, one of the composer’s most internationally recognised works and a cornerstone of the Romantic concerto repertoire.
Born in 1924, Nikolayeva studied at the Moscow Conservatory and became one of the major figures of Soviet pianism. Her career was closely connected with the Russian repertoire, from Bach and Beethoven to Prokofiev and Shostakovich, whose music she championed extensively. Her Tchaikovsky performances therefore sit within a much wider musical tradition, carried through her recordings, teaching and concert career.
